Easy Ginger Lemonade Drink Recipe
This naturally sugar-free lemonade is easy to make in under 5 minutes. You probably already have all of the ingredients you need for this recipe in your kitchen. It's a natural, preservative-free option that is great for any time of the day. Store-bought bottled lemonade doesn't even compare to the taste or health benefits of homemade lemonade.
In addition to being delicious and good for you, this drink is also customizable. You can easily adapt the ingredients to fit your taste, whether you prefer a milder or stronger version, or one that is sweetened.
Just 2 Ingredients
Homemade ginger lemonade comes together with just 2 simple ingredients. Sweetener is the third ingredient, but is completely optional. In addition to the ingredients below, you will also need water and ice cubes.
- Fresh lemons: Always use fresh lemons for the best flavor. I like to use Meyer lemons because they are sweetener than traditional lemons and naturally add a hint of sweetness to the drink. To extract the fresh lemon juice you will peel and process the whole lemon before straining through a fine mesh sieve. Do not use bottled lemon juice.
- Fresh ginger: I always recommend using fresh turmeric for lemonade because the flavor of ground turmeric is very different. If you like the flavor of ground turmeric, then you can use it.
- Sweetener (optional): See the notes below for how to sweeten this lemonade naturally.
Sweeten Naturally
This lemonade tastes great on its own, but if you prefer a touch of sweetness like traditional lemonade, than you can choose from a variety of sweeteners.
- Dates: The best natural option for lemonade. Just add 1 to 3 pitted medjool dates to the blender along with the rest of the ingredients.
- Maple syrup, coconut nectar, agave, raw honey: All of these are great liquid sweeteners, many of which have beneficial properties. Use raw honey to make honey ginger lemonade but keep in mind that honey is not a vegan option. Any of these sweeteners can be added to the blender or mixed in the pitcher after straining the lemonade.
- Coconut sugar: This is a natural sweetener with a lower glycemic index than refined sugar. Add it to the blender when you add the rest of the ingredients.
I recommend starting with a small amount of sweetener and adjusting to your taste preference. Feel free to use any sweetener of your choice. The sweetener will help to mellow out the kick of ginger and tartness of the lemon.
Recipe Tips and Variations
While this classic recipe tastes great as is, there are many ways to adapt this recipe.
- Fresh mint, basil, or lavender: Add a few fresh mint leaves, basil leaves or sprigs of lavender to the pitcher or to your glass before serving. Not only is it a beautiful garnish, but it also adds a hint of flavor.
- Turmeric: If you want to enhance the anti-inflammatory properties of this drink, you can add ground turmeric or a small piece of fresh turmeric.
- Fruit: For a fun and vibrant touch, you can add orange or grapefruit slices to the pitcher. Or blend some mango or strawberries and add it to the lemonade for even more fresh fruit flavor.
- Coconut water: To add a hint of coconut flavor and hydration, you can substitute up to 2 cups of water with coconut water.
- Sparkling ginger lemonade: To add a little fizz to your drink, only use ½ of the water (3 cups). Just before serving, add 3 cups of sparkling water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! It's recommended to peel them to prevent the fresh lemon juice from having a bitter taste due to the peel. If you like the bitter taste of lemon peels, then you can definitely leave it on but I don't recommend it.
If the flavor is too strong just add more water. You can easily adjust the water, lemon juice, ginger or sweetener to fit your taste.
Storage Instructions
Ginger lemonade is best served fresh so I like to prepare it the same day I am going to serve it. However, you can store it in the refrigerator in a glass bottle or large pitcher with a lid for up to 48 hours.
To freeze, transfer the lemonade to an ice cube tray. Freeze until you're ready to serve, then add the cubes to a glass of water when you're ready to enjoy.
Final Thoughts
This drink is one of the best ways to satisfy your taste for something refreshing. It's a great alternative to unhealthy choices like soda.
Whether you're a big fan of lemonade or are looking for drink ideas to serve at your next event or celebration, this lemonade will delight all of your guests.
