What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is an algae that is super nutritious and packed with many health benefits. I try to incorporate spirulina into my diet every day. Here are just a few of the potential benefits spirulina offers, among many others.
- Very high in iron
- Rich in protein
- Detoxifies: It helps to eliminate heavy metals from the body, such as mercury, lead and aluminum.
- Strengthens intestinal flora
- Stabilizes blood sugar.
- Rich in antioxidants
- Anti-aging
- Contains all essential amino acids
Spirulina is available in capsule or powder form. The flavor is earthy and sometimes grassy. The color is blue or a vibrant green color.
It's best to pair it with foods that mask it's flavor like banana, mango, berries, citrus, ginger, dates, maple syrup, coconut milk, and vegan yogurt. This is why spirulina is a great addition to smoothies.

- Easy to make ahead and packable: Smoothies are a great snack to make ahead. You can store them in a sealed jar or glass container until you're ready to serve. They are also great for on-the-go!
- Good for you: Who can resist a healthy smoothie that is made with a delicious blend of fruits and vegetables. It tastes great and is good for your body too!

- Bananas: Adds creaminess and a soft, sweet flavor that adds to the rest of the ingredients. You can use fresh or frozen banana.
- Celery: Provides mineral salts that are highly beneficial.
- Spinach: Mild in flavor, but with an intense green color that makes the smoothie nutritious and full of vitamins and minerals.
- Spirulina: The star ingredient for this recipe with it's dark green hue. Its strong flavor is masked by the other delicious fruits and vegetables in this smoothie. You can buy spirulina at many health food stores or at many grocery stores.

Recipe Tips
- Adapt the smoothie to fit your taste: For an extra touch of sweetness, add another banana or a pitted date. If you're new to green smoothies, the key is to making them sweet enough to balance the flavor of the greens and get your palate used to them.
- Add more greens: If you want to incorporate even more greens into your diet, you can add an extra handful of baby spinach to the smoothie. You may need to adjust the water to ensure it blends completely smooth.
- Add other ingredients: If you enjoy this smoothie as an afternoon snack, you can add flax seeds, hemp seeds or chia seeds. If you enjoy it for breakfast, then I don't recommend adding any seeds as they contain fat. Following a Medical Medium protocol, you should not consume fats in the morning.
- Make a smoothie bowl: Turn your smoothie into a bowl and top with fresh or frozen fruit, coconut flakes, or your other favorite toppings. This is a great option for dessert!
Storage and Make Ahead
You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Blend the smoothie well before serving to make sure everything is mixed together.
