What is Golden Milk?
Golden Milk is a drink made with warming spices like turmeric, cinnamon, and fresh ginger plus your choice of milk. It's also called a Turmeric Latte or Golden Latte. Traditionally, it is served hot, but you can also enjoy it iced.
Turmeric gives the drink the intense golden color and offers anti-inflammatory compounds due to its curcumin content. It tastes warm, earthy and slightly spicy. You can easily adapt the flavor to fit your taste.
Where does Golden Milk come from?
Turmeric is one of the main spices used in Indian cooking, so it's only natural that it comes from India. It's been used in traditional Indian medicine, called ayurveda, for centuries.
What started as a drink in India to comfort the sick has turned into a drink enjoyed around the world. You can now find turmeric lattes at your local coffee and tea shops. But nothing beats making it at home!
Golden Milk Benefits
Not only is golden milk a soothing and delicious drink, it also offers many health benefits. Turmeric, the main spice using in the drink, is loaded with curcumin. The combination of turmeric with other ingredients like black pepper may enhance its effects. (source)

Recipe Tips and Variations
- Milk: I like to use creamy coconut milk in this turmeric latte recipe, but any type of non-dairy milk will work. Homemade almond milk is another great choice.
- Using water: While golden milk is best with a creamy dairy-free milk, you can use water if desired. It will not taste quite the same and will not be as creamy, but you will still be able to enjoy some of the health benefits of the other ingredients.
- Fresh turmeric: You can use fresh turmeric instead of the ground turmeric, if desired. Use a 2-inch slice of fresh turmeric root instead of the ground turmeric, and you will want to make sure to simmer the liquid mixture for at least 5 minutes before straining.
- Ground cinnamon: If you don't have ground cinnamon, you can use a cinnamon stick.
- Add a touch of sweetness: If you want to add a hint of sweetness to your latte, use agave nectar or maple syrup.
- Taste and adjust: Once you have tried this recipe, you can taste and adjust the ingredients to fit your taste. If you want more heat, add more black pepper or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
- Staining: The main spice used in this recipe is turmeric which can stain. Be careful not to spill the drink. If it spills, wipe it up immediately.
- Use a blender or milk frother: I use a blender to froth the milk into creamy goodness, but you can use a milk frother, if desired.
- Iced golden milk latte: To make it iced, only add a small amount of milk to the pan with the other ingredients during step 1. Simmer the ingredients together to combine, then strain through a sieve. Pour the mixture over a large glass filled with ice and plant-based milk. Serve cold!

Turmeric Latte (Golden Milk)
Ingredients
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 1 ½ teaspoons turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 slice of fresh ginger
- Splash of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- Pinch of Celtic sea salt
- Pinch of black pepper
- Honey or maple syrup to taste (optional)
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to a small saucepan set over medium heat. Stir with a wooden spoon until the coconut oil is completely melted and the milk is hot, but not boiling. Add a sweetener like honey or maple syrup to taste, if desired.
- Use a sieve to remove the ginger. Carefully transfer everything in the pan to a blender. I use a heat-resistant glass blender, but if you don't have a glass blender, you can skip this step or use a handheld milk frother.
- Blend at high speed until the liquid becomes frothy. Serve and enjoy!
